Original question

Some employees and workers do not give their work the necessary diligence. A year or more may pass without one of them encouraging good or discouraging evil. He arrives late and says, “My manager has permitted me, so I bear no blame.” Does a person who continues in this state bear any religious blame? Please advise us; may Allah reward you with good.

Answer

First, every Muslim man and woman is prescribed to convey the good he or she has heard concerning Allah, glorified and exalted is He. This is indicated by the Messenger's ﷺ words: “May Allah brighten a person who hears my statement, understands it, then conveys it as he heard it,” and: “Convey from me, even one verse.” When addressing and admonishing people, he would say: “Let those present convey to those absent, for someone to whom it is conveyed may understand it better than one who heard it.” I therefore advise you all to convey the good you hear with insight and careful verification.

Anyone who hears and retains knowledge should convey what he considers beneficial from it to his household, sisters and companions, taking care to preserve it accurately and not speak about something he has not retained, so that he is among those who urge one another to truth and call to good.

As for employees who do not perform their work or are not conscientious in it, you have heard that fulfilling and safeguarding trusts are qualities of faith. Allah, glorified and exalted is He, says: “Allah commands you to return trusts to their rightful owners” [al-Nisāʾ 4:58]. Trustworthiness is among the greatest qualities of faith, and betrayal among the greatest qualities of hypocrisy. Describing believers, Allah says: “Those who faithfully observe their trusts and covenants” [al-Muʾminūn 23:8]. He says: “O you who believe, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or knowingly betray your trusts” [al-Anfāl 8:27].

The employee must therefore fulfil the trust truthfully, sincerely and carefully, safeguarding working time so that he discharges his responsibility, makes his earnings lawful and good, pleases his Lord, and acts faithfully towards his state, company or whatever organization employs him. The employee must fear Allah and fulfil the trust with the utmost proficiency and sincerity, hoping for Allah's reward and fearing His punishment, and acting upon His words: “Allah commands you to return trusts to their rightful owners” [al-Nisāʾ 4:58].

Betrayal of trusts is one of the qualities of hypocrites. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; and when entrusted, he betrays.” Al-Bukhārī and Muslim agreed upon it. A Muslim may not resemble hypocrites. Rather, he must avoid their qualities, safeguard his trust, perform his work with the utmost care and preserve his time, even if his manager is lax or does not instruct him. He must not neglect or be careless with his work. Rather, he should strive to perform his work and fulfil the trust more faithfully than his manager, becoming a good example for others.
