Original question
Another asks: My sons work together selling qurṣān flatbreads. They put thirty-five pieces in a carton, but when a buyer comes they say there are fifty. All the qurṣān sellers do this. What is Your Eminence's view?
Answer
This is cheating, betrayal and lying. Whoever puts thirty-five in the carton and tells the buyer there are fifty or forty has done something unlawful and wrong. He must repent to Allah and give in charity the corresponding amount he took from people's money, because this is cheating. He must state exactly what is in the carton. If there are ten, he says ten; if forty, he says forty. He must not add to the number. That is his duty.
If he exaggerates the number, he has lied, done wrong and cheated Muslims. He must repent to Allah and return the extra money to its owner if he knows him. If he does not know him, he gives in charity the extra money he took without right. May Allah grant everyone success, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muḥammad, his family and his Companions.
