Original Q&A · Full displayed answer
The complete answer concerns sacrifice offered as worship to other than Allah. It retains the evidence, the instruction to teach and the final supplication. It is not a verdict about an identified present-day individual’s circumstances.

Original question
Is slaughtering for other than Allah permissible? Some people here slaughter for a man called Mujalla. When we ask who Mujalla is, they say he is one of Allah’s prophets. Please advise us; may Allah bless you.
Answer
Slaughtering for other than Allah is a grave wrong and major shirk, whether it is done for a prophet, a righteous person, a celestial body, a jinn, an idol or anything else. Allah, exalted is He, says, ‘Say: my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of all worlds. He has no partner. This I have been commanded, and I am the first of those who submit’ [al-Anam 6:162–163]. He tells us that sacrifice belongs to Allah, just as prayer belongs to Allah. If someone sacrifices to another, it is like praying to another: it is associating a partner with Allah, mighty and exalted. Likewise Allah says to His Prophet ﷺ, ‘We have given you al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice’ [al-Kawthar 108:1–2]. Prayer and sacrifice are two great acts of worship.
Anyone who directs sacrifice to the occupants of graves, prophets, celestial bodies, idols, jinn or angels has associated a partner with Allah, just as if he prayed to them, called upon them for rescue or made vows to them. All of this is shirk. Allah, exalted is He, says, ‘The mosques belong to Allah, so do not call upon anyone alongside Allah’ [al-Jinn 72:18]. He says, ‘I created jinn and mankind only to worship Me’ [al-Dhariyat 51:56], and, ‘Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him’ [al-Isra 17:23].
Worship is Allah’s right. Sacrifice, calling for rescue and prayer are acts of worship. It is established that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Allah curses whoever sacrifices to other than Allah.’ Muslim narrated it in his Sahih from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. You should object to what these people do and teach them that it is major shirk and that they must abandon it. They may not sacrifice to other than Allah, just as they may not pray to other than Allah. This is part of cooperating in righteousness and piety, forbidding wrong, calling to Allah and devoting worship sincerely to Him. It is part of the tawhid that must belong to Allah alone, exalted is He. Scholars, students of knowledge and the leaders of the Muslims have a duty to cooperate in righteousness and piety and object to shirk when it is committed, so that tawhid becomes manifest and the causes of shirk are removed. We ask Allah to grant everyone success and guidance.
