Original question

Esteemed Shaykh, what is the Salaf’s belief concerning the Noble Quran?

Answer

The Salaf’s belief concerning the Noble Quran is like their belief concerning Allah’s other Attributes and Names: it is founded upon what Allah’s Book and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ indicate. We all know that Allah described the Quran as His speech, sent down from Him. He says: “If any of the polytheists seeks your protection, grant him protection so that he may hear Allah’s speech, then convey him to his place of safety” [al-Tawbah 9:6]. Allah’s speech here undoubtedly means the Noble Quran. Allah also says: “This Quran relates to the Children of Israel most of that concerning which they differ” [al-Naml 27:76]. The Quran is Allah’s speech in wording and meaning. He truly spoke it and conveyed it to the trustworthy Jibril, who then brought it down upon the Prophet’s heart ﷺ so that he would be among the warners, in a clear Arabic tongue. The Salaf believe that the Quran was revealed: Allah sent it down to Muhammad ﷺ in portions over twenty-three years, in accordance with His wisdom.

Its revelation may be initial or occasioned by a particular cause: some passages were revealed for a particular reason, and others without such a reason. Some recount an earlier situation involving the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions; others introduce prescribed rulings, as explained by the scholars in this subject. The Salaf also say that the Quran comes originally from Allah and will return to Him near the end of time. This is the Salaf’s belief concerning the Noble Quran.

It is also clear to us all that Allah described the Quran with great qualities: wisdom, nobility, greatness, and glory. These qualities with which Allah described His speech will belong to those who hold fast to this Book and act upon it inwardly and outwardly. Allah grants them glory, greatness, wisdom, honour, and authority that He does not grant to those who fail to hold fast to His Book. Hence I call all Muslims—rulers and subjects, scholars and ordinary people—to hold fast to Allah’s Book inwardly and outwardly, so that they attain His pleasure and have honour, happiness, glory, and ascendancy in the east and west of the earth.
