Original question

He asks Your Eminence about the etiquette of supplication in Islam. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer

Supplication has etiquette in Islam—great etiquette. It includes turning towards Allah and having an attentive heart while supplicating: bringing your heart to the supplication, facing the qiblah, raising your hands, persisting in supplication and repeating it. You begin by praising Allah and invoking blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, then you supplicate. All this is part of its etiquette. If you are in a state of ritual purity, that is more complete.

Its etiquette also includes being careful to avoid consuming what is unlawful: ensuring that your food, clothing and earnings are lawful and good. Consuming what is unlawful is among the causes of being deprived of an answer, and sins are among the causes of being deprived of an answer.

Giving attention to obeying Allah, remaining steadfast in obedience to Him, avoiding sins, and avoiding consuming what is unlawful are all means of having supplication answered.

Being careless about sins or unlawful earnings is among the causes that prevent an answer. There is no power and no strength except through Allah. Yes.

Presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
