Original Q&A · Full displayed answer
The question follows the list of prayer pillars. Preserve the distinction between deliberate omission and forgetfulness, and between returning to a missed pillar and a later rakah replacing the earlier one. This answer does not say that sujud al-sahw alone replaces an omitted pillar.

Original question
Esteemed Shaykh, what is the ruling on someone who omits one of these pillars?
Answer
If someone deliberately omits one of these pillars, his prayer is invalid; it becomes invalid as soon as he omits it. If he forgets it, however, he returns to it. For example, if he forgets to bow and prostrates after completing his recitation, then remembers while prostrating that he did not bow, he must stand, bow, and then complete his prayer. He must return to the omitted pillar unless he has reached its corresponding place in the next rakah. If he reaches that place in the next rakah, the next rakah replaces the rakah from which he omitted it.
If he did not bow, then prostrated, sat between the two prostrations, performed the second prostration, and then remembered, he must stand and bow, then continue and complete his prayer. If he only remembers omitting the bowing after reaching the bowing position in the next rakah, that next rakah replaces the rakah in which he omitted bowing.
Likewise, suppose someone forgets the second prostration and stands after the first prostration. During recitation he remembers that he did not perform the second prostration or sit between the two prostrations. He must return, sit between the two prostrations, perform the second prostration, and then complete his prayer. Even if he only remembers omitting the second prostration and sitting between the two prostrations after bowing, he must go back down, sit, prostrate, and then continue his prayer. If he only remembers omitting the second prostration in the first rakah after sitting between the two prostrations in the next rakah, the next rakah replaces the first and becomes his first rakah.
In every situation described, he must perform prostrations of forgetfulness because these actions added something to the prayer. He performs them after the salam, because when prostrations of forgetfulness are caused by an addition, their place is after the salam, as indicated by the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ.
