Original question
A person intended ʿUmrah or Hajj but passed the mīqāt, entered iḥrām beyond it, and completed the rites of Hajj or ʿUmrah. What must he do?
Answer
He must slaughter a sacrificial offering, distribute it to the poor of the sanctuary and eat none of it, if he passed his mīqāt without iḥrām and entered iḥrām afterwards while already intending ʿUmrah or Hajj when he crossed the mīqāt. When the Prophet ﷺ designated the mīqāts for the people of Madinah, the Levant, Yemen and Najd, he said: “They are for their people and for anyone else who comes by them intending Hajj or ʿUmrah. Whoever is within those boundaries enters from where he begins, including the people of Makkah from Makkah.” Its authenticity is agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. An exception is a resident of Makkah who wants ʿUmrah: he must enter iḥrām from outside the sanctuary, because the Prophet ﷺ instructed ʿĀʾishah to do this when she wanted ʿUmrah while in Makkah. Allah is the One who grants success.
