Original question
The questioner Muḥammad ʿ. Kh. says: A relative of mine is very undutiful towards his parents. What rights do parents have over their children? Your Eminence, do you have a word for those who behave this way towards both parents or one of them?
Answer
A child must honour his parents and beware of being undutiful. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Shall I tell you the greatest of major sins?” We said, “Yes, Messenger of Allah.” He replied: “Associating partners with Allah and being undutiful to parents.” He thus counted being undutiful to parents among the greatest major sins. He ﷺ also said: “Among the major sins is a man insulting his parents.” He was asked, “Messenger of Allah, does a man insult his own parents?” He replied: “He insults another man's father, so that man insults his father; and he insults his mother, so that man insults his mother.” Being undutiful to them and insults of this kind are major sins, so one must beware.
Allah, majestic and exalted, says: “Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and treat parents well. If one or both reach old age with you, do not say to them ‘uff’ or rebuke them, but speak to them honourably. Lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small’” [al-Isrāʾ 17:23–24]. He says: “Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final return” [Luqmān 31:14]. It is therefore obligatory to honour them, treat them well and thank them, and to beware of being undutiful to them. We ask Allah for well-being.
Yes.
Presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah be good to you and reward you with good.
