Original question
A woman from Taif, Saudi Arabia, asks: I developed a stomach illness that prevented me from fasting the whole of Ramadan. What should I do?
Answer
If a Muslim develops an illness of the stomach or elsewhere that makes fasting impossible or difficult, he breaks the fast, then makes it up after recovery. Allah, mighty and exalted, says in Surat al-Baqarah: “Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down as guidance for people and clear proofs of guidance and the criterion. Whoever among you is present in that month should fast it. Whoever is ill or travelling should fast the same number on other days. Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you, so that you complete the number and glorify Allah for having guided you, and that you may be grateful” [al-Baqarah 2:185].
Allah is the One who grants success.
