Original question
What is voluntary fasting, and how many days a week is it?
Answer
Anything other than an obligatory fast is called voluntary. Fasting that is not for Ramadan, an expiation or a vow is called voluntary: for example, fasting Mondays and Thursdays, the white days—the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth—fasting on alternate days, six days of Shawwāl, ʿĀshūrāʾ, and the Day of ʿArafah for those who are not performing Hajj. All of this is voluntary worship.
Shaykh: Repeat his question.
Presenter: He asks: What is voluntary fasting, and how many days a week is it?
Shaykh: Everything apart from obligatory fasts is voluntary. Mondays and Thursdays are preferable. If he fasts one day and does not fast the next, that is the best fasting, as the Prophet ﷺ told ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr: “Fast one day and do not fast the next. That is the best fasting, and it is the fasting of Dāwūd, peace and blessings be upon him.” But it is not binding; it is only recommended. Yes.
Presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
