Original question
Esteemed Shaykh, there is presumably a dividing line between obeying parents in obedience to Allah and obeying them in disobedience to Allah. Please explain it, since many people fall into this without knowing.
Answer
Obedience to parents, as mentioned, is part of obedience to Allah. Being dutiful to them is obligatory, and mistreating them is a major sin. This includes acts of obedience that Allah loves and permissible matters. Even in a permissible matter, if they ask their child to take them somewhere permissible or buy something they need, and he can do so, he must do it when it causes him no harm. Likewise, if they ask him to prepare coffee or tea or bring drinking water or water for wudu, and he can do it, he must obey them even in that permissible matter.
The point is that he must obey them in what is right, when it involves neither harm nor disobedience. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Obedience is only in what is right.”
If they order disobedience to Allah—for example, not praying in the mosque, drinking alcohol, smoking, dealing in interest, or another sin—he is not required to obey them. If they order him to go to lands of shirk or to do something else that harms him, he is not required to do so. The Prophet ﷺ said: “There must be neither harm nor reciprocal harm,” and: “Obedience is only in what is right.”
If they ask for something right and permissible that benefits them without harming him, he obeys them. As for something harmful to him or disobedient to Allah, obedience is not required. He nevertheless declines with kind words and good manners, prays for their guidance and success, and explains his excuse: no one is obeyed in sin, whether a parent, ruler or authority. The Messenger ﷺ said: “Obedience is only in what is right,” and: “No created being is obeyed in disobedience to the Creator.”
Allah told His Prophet: “And they will not disobey you in what is right” [al-Mumtahanah 60:12]. If he explains this to sensible parents, they will accept the religious excuse. If they insist on their opinion without evidence, he still need not obey them in what harms him or disobeys Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Yes.
Presenter: May Allah reward you. Does this reach the point of severing relations between the child and his parents?
Shaykh: No. He does not cut them off. He treats them well, obeys them in what is right, stays in contact and is gentle with them. He does not obey them in disobedience to Allah or in what harms him. If they say, without justification, “Demolish your house,” or, without a valid excuse, “Divorce your wife,” that is not required. Yes.
Presenter: May Allah reward you. What about a child cutting off his parents over a minor disagreement and preventing his children from maintaining contact with them?
Shaykh: That is not permissible; it is not permissible; it is not permissible. He may not mistreat or cut off his parents because they ask for something harmful to him. He maintains ties and treats them well, declining only the harmful thing, while remaining gentle, kind, well-spoken and dutiful in everything he can. He does not obey their sinful request but continues his kindness. Allah says concerning unbelieving parents: “If they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them; but accompany them in this world with kindness” [Luqman 31:15], although they are unbelievers.
Presenter: And that is while they are unbelievers.
Shaykh: “If they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them; but accompany them in this world with kindness” [Luqman 31:15]. Allah commands kind companionship even when they are unbelievers; how much more so with Muslim parents.
The point is that even if parents press their child to commit shirk, he does not obey them in it, but neither does he mistreat them. He remains gentle and kind, even though they have wronged him by ordering shirk or sin. He explains the religious excuse, treats them gently and prays for their guidance. Yes.
