Original Q&A · Complete published question and answer

The complete published question and answer are included. The repeated phrase about premises “for selling” means premises used to sell goods, as the Shaykh expressly explains; it does not mean property itself held for resale.

Original question

We own a shop and are making a large loss in it. Do we still owe zakah on the merchandise?

Answer

If the goods in it are for trade, intended for sale, you must pay their zakah. As for the premises used for selling, the premises themselves are not intended to be sold. They are a building or shop in which selling takes place; there is no zakah on them. Rather, the goods inside that are intended for sale are called trade goods. Whenever a year passes, their value is determined and zakah is paid on it. As for the building or shop used for selling, there is no zakah on it, because it is prepared as a place for selling, not to be sold itself. Goods are placed in it: it is prepared to hold goods for sale, while the premises themselves are not intended for sale. There is therefore no zakah on the premises, because selling them is not intended; goods are merely placed in them. The goods prepared for sale are called trade goods, and zakah is due on them. Yes.
