Original question

Please clarify shortening prayer during travel. Is it established that the Prophet ﷺ prayed the prayers in full while travelling? Is travel prayer governed by distance and duration? Please explain these questions with evidence from the Quran and Sunnah. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer

When the Prophet ﷺ travelled, he prayed Ẓuhr as two rakʿahs, ʿAṣr as two and ʿIshāʾ as two until he returned from his journey. This is what is reliably transmitted from him, peace and blessings be upon him. It has been narrated that he ﷺ both shortened and prayed in full, but that is not reliably established from him. What is reliably transmitted in authentic hadiths is that he shortened during travel until he returned. As for Maghrib, he prayed it in its usual form, three rakʿahs, whether travelling or resident. Likewise, he prayed Fajr as two whether travelling or resident, and prayed its preceding Sunnah both during travel and at home: two brief rakʿahs. As for the Sunnah prayers associated with Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ, he, peace and blessings be upon him, left them during travel.

The believer should therefore follow what he, peace and blessings be upon him, did during travel. According to the scholars, travel is a distance amounting to a day and a night—that is, two stages. This is the view of the majority of scholars. It is estimated at roughly eighty kilometres for someone travelling by car, and likewise by aeroplane, ship or steamer. This distance, or approximately it, is called travel and is regarded as travel in customary usage, as is known among Muslims. If a person travels this distance or more on a camel, on foot, by car, aeroplane or sea vessel, he is a traveller. Some scholars say it is defined by custom rather than a distance measured in kilometres: what custom regards as travel is travel and prayers may be shortened during it, and what it does not regard as travel is not. The correct view is what the majority of scholars have established: defining it by the distance mentioned. This is the position of most scholars and should be adhered to. It is what is reported from the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them and grant them His pleasure—who were the most knowledgeable of people about Allah's religion and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ.
