Original question

Please also explain this hadith: Abū Ayyūb—may Allah be pleased with him—reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwāl is like one who fasts continually.” Please clarify these days: are they at the beginning, middle or end of the month?

Answer

The hadith is authentic. Muslim recorded it in his Ṣaḥīḥ, and it has supporting reports, all indicating that it is recommended for believing men and women to fast six days of Shawwāl. When a person finishes the fast of Ramadan, it is recommended to fast six days of Shawwāl.

The Prophet ﷺ did not specify whether they should be at the beginning, end or middle. This indicates latitude: there is no harm in fasting them at the beginning, middle or end, or consecutively or separately. There is latitude in all of this, praise be to Allah.

But hastening to do them for fear of interruptions or obstacles is good. Allah, majestic and exalted, says: “I hastened to You, my Lord, so that You would be pleased” [Ṭā Hā 20:84]. He says: “Race towards forgiveness from your Lord” [al-Ḥadīd 57:21], and: “Compete in good deeds” [al-Baqarah 2:148]. If a person hastens to fast them consecutively at the beginning of the month, fearing an obstacle or something that may prevent him, this is precaution, hastening to good, and acting resolutely in good deeds. If he delays them until the middle or end of the month, there is no harm. If he fasts them separately, alternating fasting and non-fasting until he completes six, there is no harm in any of this, praise be to Allah.

Presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Your Eminence, should someone who missed fasts for an excuse begin by making up the Ramadan fasts or by fasting the six?

Shaykh: It is better to begin with the fasts he must make up because they are obligatory. People have differed over this. Some scholars said that beginning with the make-up fasts is necessary.

Some scholars said it is permissible to delay making them up and perform recommended fasts. Others permitted giving the recommended fasts priority but preferred making up the obligatory ones first. This is what should be done: preference should be given to making them up, meaning that he should begin with them. But if he fasts, for example, the Day of ʿArafah while owing make-up fasts, or ʿĀshūrāʾ, or three days each month, it is valid, Allah willing, and he has a reward. Still, he should not do that; he should begin by making up the obligatory fasts, because they are obligatory and it is more prudent in his case. An obstacle may prevent him or death may come unexpectedly. He should therefore begin with making them up. The view that one should begin with the make-up fasts is preferable and more cautious, safeguarding one's religion and seeking to discharge one's liability. Yes.

Presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
