Original question
Shaykh al-Islām was asked about someone who finds that the prayer has already been commenced. Which is better: joining the obligatory prayer, or performing the Sunnah prayer and then catching the imam, even if only in the tashahhud? Are the two rakʿahs of Fajr a Sunnah prayer belonging to Ṣubḥ or not?
Answer
It is authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When the prayer has been commenced, there is no prayer except the prescribed prayer.” In another narration: “There is no prayer except the one that has been commenced.” Thus, once the prayer has been commenced, a person should not occupy himself with the prayer of greeting the mosque or the Sunnah prayer of Fajr. The scholars agree that he should not occupy himself with the prayer of greeting the mosque instead of joining it.
They disagree, however, concerning the Sunnah prayer of Fajr. The correct view is that once he hears the iqamah, he does not perform the Sunnah prayer, whether at home or elsewhere. He may make it up after the obligatory prayer if he wishes. The Sunnah is to pray two voluntary rakʿahs after dawn has appeared, and the obligatory prayer consists of two rakʿahs. Between dawn and the obligatory prayer, the regular Sunnah prayer is only these two rakʿahs. The obligatory prayer is called the prayer of Fajr, Ghadāh, or Ṣubḥ. Likewise, the Sunnah prayer is called the Sunnah of Fajr, the Sunnah of Ṣubḥ, the two rakʿahs of Fajr, and similar names. Allah knows best.
