Original Q&A · Complete published question and answer
The complete official item is included. The final paragraph's compressed phrase “يوم عرفة تسع ذي الحجة” moves from ʿArafah to the nine days of Dhū al-Ḥijjah; the English marks the supplied conjunction [and]. Shawwāl is the month after Ramadan; the passage does not prescribe fasting on Eid day.

Original question
He asks Your Eminence: Please advise me about the days on which voluntary fasting is prescribed, and their relative importance so that I know which are most important. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer
It is preferable for a believer to fast three days every month, because the Messenger ﷺ instructed ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr and others to do so, and advised Abū Hurayrah and Abū al-Dardāʾ to fast three days every month. If he fasts them on the white days, that is better: the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth. If he fasts on other days, there is no harm.
The point is to fast three days each month, at its beginning, middle or end, separately or consecutively; all of this is acceptable. Fasting them on the white days is better. Next comes fasting Mondays and Thursdays. It is recommended, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to fast them.
Then comes fasting one day and not fasting the next. This is the best of them. If a person is able to fast one day and not fast the next, this is the best voluntary fasting. The Prophet ﷺ told ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr: “Fast one day and do not fast the next. That is the fasting of Dāwūd, and it is the best fasting.”
But fasting three days each month without burdening oneself is easier, or fasting Mondays and Thursdays is easier. It is recommended to fast six days of Shawwāl after the end of Ramadan, every year. This is preferable: six days of Shawwāl, together or separately. It is also recommended to fast the Day of ʿArafah [and] the first nine days of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, for these are great days. Likewise, fasting ʿĀshūrāʾ, the tenth of Muḥarram, is recommended, along with a day before it or a day after it, or both the day before and the day after. All these are recommended. But the best is fasting one day and not fasting the next, if one is able and it is feasible. Yes.
