Original question
Is the farewell ṭawāf obligatory for anyone intending to leave Makkah in every circumstance, or is it recommended or a Sunnah?
Answer
Scholars differ over the obligation of the farewell ṭawāf. The correct view is that it is obligatory for the Hajj pilgrim and recommended for the ʿUmrah pilgrim, because the Prophet ﷺ said to the people during the Farewell Pilgrimage: “None of you should depart until his last act is at the House.” Muslim narrated it. In the two Ṣaḥīḥs, Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—said: “The people were commanded to make their last act at the House, except that a concession was given to a menstruating woman.” From these two noble hadiths you learn the ruling on the farewell ṭawāf. ʿUmrah resembles Hajj, because it is a lesser pilgrimage.
A menstruating woman is not required to perform the farewell ṭawāf, nor is a woman with postpartum bleeding, because she has the same ruling. Allah is the One who grants success.
