Original question
On the occasion of the Night of Decree, would Your Eminence address Muslims generally about this noble occasion?
Answer
The Night of Decree is the best of nights. Allah sent down the Quran in it, and He, glorified is He, has said that it is better than a thousand months, that it is blessed, and that every wise matter is determined in it. He says at the beginning of Surah al-Dukhān: “Ḥā Mīm. By the clear Book. We sent it down on a blessed night; indeed, We have always warned. In it every wise matter is determined, by a command from Us; indeed, We have always sent messengers, as a mercy from your Lord. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing” [al-Dukhān 44:1–6].
He, glorified is He, says: “Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree. What will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend in it, by their Lord's permission, with every matter. It is peace until the rise of dawn” [al-Qadr 97:1–5]. It is authentically reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever stands in prayer on the Night of Decree with faith and seeking reward will have his previous sins forgiven.” Its authenticity is agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Observing that night includes prayer, remembrance, supplication, reading the Quran, and other forms of good.
This great surah indicates that deeds on that night are better than deeds in a thousand other months. This is tremendous bounty and mercy from Allah towards His servants. Muslims should therefore honour it and spend it in worship. The Prophet ﷺ said that it is in the last ten nights of Ramadan, and that the odd nights are more likely than the others. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan; seek it in every odd night.”
Authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ indicate that this night moves within the ten and is not always one particular night. It may be the twenty-first, twenty-third, twenty-fifth, twenty-seventh—which is the most likely—twenty-ninth, or one of the even nights. Whoever stands in worship throughout all ten nights with faith and seeking reward undoubtedly reaches this night and attains what Allah has promised its worshippers.
The Prophet ﷺ gave these nights extra effort that he did not give the first twenty. ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—said: “The Prophet ﷺ strove in the last ten nights of Ramadan as he did not strive at other times.” She also said: “When the ten began, he would enliven his night, awaken his family, strive earnestly and tighten his waist-wrapper.” He, peace and blessings be upon him, usually observed iʿtikāf in them. Allah, mighty and majestic, says: “You have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example” [al-Aḥzāb 33:21].
ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—asked him: “Messenger of Allah, if I encounter the Night of Decree, what should I say in it?” He said: “Say: O Allah, You are Pardoning and love to pardon, so pardon me.”
The Prophet's ﷺ Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—and the early generations after them honoured these ten nights and strove in them through different forms of good.
Muslims everywhere should therefore follow their Prophet ﷺ, his noble Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—and the righteous early generations of this community. They should spend these nights in prayer, reading the Quran, and various forms of remembrance and worship, with faith and seeking reward, so that they attain forgiveness of sins, removal of burdens and freedom from the Fire, through His bounty, generosity and kindness, glorified is He.
The Quran and Sunnah indicate that this great promise is attained while avoiding major sins. Allah, glorified is He, says: “If you avoid the major sins that you are forbidden, We will remove your lesser sins from you and admit you to a noble entrance” [al-Nisāʾ 4:31].
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The five prayers, one Friday to the next, and one Ramadan to the next expiate what occurs between them, provided major sins are avoided.” Imam Muslim recorded it in his Ṣaḥīḥ.
Something that must be pointed out is that some Muslims strive during Ramadan and repent to Allah, glorified is He, of their past sins, then return to their evil deeds after Ramadan ends. This contains great danger.
The Muslim must beware of that and sincerely resolve to continue obeying Allah and abandon sins. Allah, mighty and majestic, says to His Prophet ﷺ: “Worship your Lord until certainty comes to you” [al-Ḥijr 15:99]. He Most High says: “O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims” [Āl ʿImrān 3:102]. He, glorified is He, says: “Those who say, ‘Our Lord is Allah,’ then remain steadfast—the angels descend upon them: ‘Do not fear or grieve; receive glad tidings of the Paradise you were promised. We are your allies in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. There you will have whatever your souls desire, and there you will have whatever you ask for, as hospitality from One who is All-Forgiving, Especially Merciful’” [Fuṣṣilat 41:30–32].
The verse means that those who acknowledge that Allah is their Lord, believe in Him, devote worship sincerely to Him and remain steadfast upon that are given good news by the angels at death: that they shall have no fear or sorrow and that their destination is Paradise. This is because of their faith in Him, their steadfast obedience to Him, their avoidance of disobedience, and their sincere devotion of worship to Him, glorified is He. Many verses convey this meaning, all indicating the obligation to remain firm upon the truth and steadfast upon it, and to beware of persisting in disobedience to Allah, mighty and majestic.
Among them are His words, blessed and exalted is He: “Hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the God-fearing: those who spend in ease and hardship, restrain anger and pardon people—and Allah loves those who do good—and those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins; who forgives sins except Allah? They do not knowingly persist in what they have done. Their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens beneath which rivers flow, remaining therein forever. How excellent is the reward of those who act” [Āl ʿImrān 3:133–136].
We ask Allah to grant us and all Muslims success in these nights and at other times in what He loves and is pleased with, and to protect us all from the evils of ourselves and our bad deeds. He is Generous and Noble.
